- As a 7 year old he and his older brother were taken to Holland to be educated. He returned to the Cape 10 years later and after occupying several minor Government posts( clerk, translator, etc.) he qualified as an attorney. In 1830 after the premature death of his first wife and his remarriage, he returned to Holland and enrolled as a theology student at Leyden. Upon qualifing he moved to Heidelberg, Germany for the benefit of his children s education. In 1848 he returned to the Cape, and in 1851 he purchased the house Voorgelgen, 116 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch, where he died 8 years later. Although a dominee, he was never appointed to a congregation.
