- This request was refused by the Rev. Kuys, a refusal which was ardently supported by his own congregation. However in 1787 he asked to be released in order to return to the Netherlands, mainly as he was concerned about the education of his own five children, but after having made the necessary arrangements for them, he returned to the congregation which he loved. During his absence no children of slaves or Hottentots were baptized, but in 1790, after he had been back for more than a year he baptized a small slave child, Anna Silvia, who had been freed by Johannes van der Merwe and his wife Sara Bekker, who at the baptismal font had promised to give her a Christian education.35 At the same time the children of Jacob Joubert
and Barbara Wytzel, aged 23, 19, 15 and 12 were brought into the congegration and also another child whose mother was "een halve bastaard" who had absconded. Three other children of mixed origin are mentioned in the records: Jan Hendrik, aged 2, Abraham, aged 21 and David aged 23.3 [5]
