Became owner of the "Leenplaas" "De Bruintjies Rivier over de Berg" on 3 February, 1743. The name comes from one of their old horses named Bruintjies. He was formerly married to Petronella Kemp. Their son, Hermanus was designated as President of "die Republiek van Swellendam".
- Hermanus d'Oude was the father of President Hermanus Steyn (Hermanus d'Jonge) of the Swellendamse Republiek. He was also the 2nd Great Grand Father of President Paul Kruger, as well as the Great Grand uncle of President M T Steyn.
Married Petronella Kemp 1731 in Cape Town. She died after the birth of their third child.
Married Martha Potgieter 26 April 1739. Had 13 children with her.
Was a farmer in the Drakenstein district near Paarl.
Rented two farms: 't Voorhuis and Bruintjes. Bruintjes was at the Breede river - he made brandy there and he cultivated grain from 1743.

1760: bought the farm Combuys at the Cango river.
1763: bought the farm Voorhuis at the Breede river - made brandy there too.
Later on he was known as Hermanus d'Oude to distinguish him from his son, Hermanus d'Jonge.
Key figure in the rebellion in Swellendam in 1795 who declared the independent Republic of Swellendam at the time.
Hermanus d'Oude and Martha left the following farms in the Swellendam disctrict to their sons in the testament dated c. 1790:
- Bruintjiesfontein on the Klip river with blacksmith's shop
- Bruintjiesrivier on the Breede river with vessels and two brandy kettles (farmed here from 1743 with grain)
- 't Voorhuis on the Breede river with vessels and brandy kettle etc (first rented it, then he became the owner in 1762)
In 1999, the Voorhuis farm is still owned by the Steyn family after nine generations. His son Petrus Paulus became the sole owner. The old farm house was destroyed by fire in abt 1914. Douw Steyn (1845-1926) did some repairs to the ruins and used it as an ironsmith workshop. The wine cellar remained until the nineteen thirties when it was destroyed.

The Drostdy was built by the Dutch East India Company in 1747 to serve as residence and official headquarters for the Landdrost. Soon after a gaol, a house for the secretary, a mill and various outbuildings were erected.
The first Landdrost to be appointed to this district was Johannes Theophilus Rhenius and he was assisted by a board of burger heemraden and subordinates like secretary and a gaoler as well as many slaves. From 1827 the Drostdy was occupied by the civil commissioner who, with the resident magistrate, replaced the board of Landdrost and heemraden when they were abolished by the British colonial government.
In 1846 the government sold the Drostdy and the property was subdivided. In 1855 the former Drostdy was bought by the Steyn family and it remained in the hands of this family until 1939 when it was bought by the government of the Union of South Africa for the purpose of establishing a museum.
Mayville
The ground on which Mayville is situated was originally part of the Drostdy property before it was sold to the Cape government in 1846. The property on the south-western side of the old highway, which included the Drostdy building, was bought by Daniel de Bruyn for 1350 pounds.
De Bruyn lived there for a few years then divided the lower part of the property into six portions and sold five of these plots in 1853. He built the house known as Mayville on the plot which he had kept for himself.
From this time it changed hands many times, but in 1974 the Drostdy Museum received Mayville in a bequest from Nita Steyn. Over the next few years extensive restoration of the building as well as redecoration of the interior was undertaken. It was officially opened to the public as a house museum in 1978.
Swellendam in the Nineteenth Century
At the beginning of the nineteenth century Swellendam was a small village, and besides the Drostdy and its various subsidiaries, there were only a few houses in the main street.
As a new British Colony, one of its primary functions was to supply the mother country with raw materials. The financial prosperity that the town achieved was a direct result of the state of mid-century agriculture and the successful adaptation of wool-bearing sheep to this district.
The farmers in the area flourished and with them, the traders, shopkeepers and artisans of the town. The opening of Sir Lowry's Pass in 1830 also made Swellendam much more accessible.
The Dutch Reformed Church had a huge influence on the social life at that time and Dr William Robertson, the minister, concerned himself not only with the religious revival, but also with educational and cultural upliftment of his congregation.
Until the middle of the century there was no Anglican Church in Swellendam so the Dutch and English speaking people all worshipped together. The result was that these two groups socialised with ease. Queen Victoria epitomised the colonist's middle-class ideals of morality and propriety and was held in great esteem by her Dutch speaking Dutch-speaking colonists as well.
Zanddrift
Jacobus Botha who acquired grazing rights for Zanddrift was one of the four local burghers to serve on the Drostdy board of heemraden when the district was established in 1743. In 1769 Botha transferred the property to his daughter Elsje and little is known of the history of Zanddrift between Elsje's occupancy and the first recorded title deed to the property in 1848.
The nineteenth and twentieth century history of Zanddrift reflects the new owner Van Zyl whose occupancy after 1847 changed and modified the building. The farmland remains the property of the Van Zyl descendants.

- I believe that we have evidence of this in the following example. The quitrent grants to Hermanus Steyn D?Oude in the mid-eighteenth century, named ?De Combuys aan de Cango? and ?Aan?t Voorhuys Gelegen aan de Breede Rivier?, in fact indicate direction as well as location. Assuming that it was commonly accepted that a homestead comprised a voorhuis fronting south and a combuys in the northern end of the tail of a T-shaped homestead (the galdery/eetkamer was generally located between the two), then it makes sense that, in relation to the Drostdy in the District of Swellendam, the farm ?De Combuys aan de Cango? lay in a northerly direction and ?Aan?t Voorhuys Gelegen aan de Breede Rivier? lay in a southerly direction.
