  	Died in Newcastle Hospital after unsucessful surgery to a head injury sustained two months earlier in the battle of Platrand, during the siege of Ladysmith.

(2) He died in the Newcastle Hospital on 10 March 1900, apparently after an unsuccessful brain operation due to injuries sustained during the Battle of Platrand, which took place on the last day of the Siege of Ladysmith. In her written statement, his wife, Susanna Johanna LABUSCHAGNE mentions that he died on the 27th. These dates probably refer to when he was wounded as he died in hospital on the 10th of March. Hy is 'n maand later na 'n onsuksesvolle kop-operasie oorlede en is in Volksrust in die ou kerkhof begrawe. Oupa Jan was toe ongeveer ses jaar oud.
