| 80 | 1732/1733 1732/1733 Died after his wife. His estate inventory was drawn up on 30.3.1730: from Vredenburg, in on 31.12.1693 and 27.11.1694 a soldier in the Cape in service of the "Kompanjie". For 1692 he paid over 45.35 gulden and 54 gulden for 1693. This possibly points to him haveing entered into service of the "Kompanjie" at the end of February 1692 in Amsterdam and possibly arrived at the Cape in the winter of 1692. It is also mentioned that he came from Vredenburg. Although there is no town or city of this name in the Netherlands, Vredenburg is possibly the name of diverse farmhouses and monasteries in the former barony of Breda. According to Redelinghuys, the family descends from Floris de Bruen born in Brabantand died in Gorinchem, Netherlands 17.4.1639. In 1712he owned amongst other things, 25 cattle, 200 sheeo and 3000 vines. He sold Vderenburg to his brother in law Hans Jacob Conterman on 19.4.1715. With the completion of the "Opgaafrolle" [Return rolls] in April 1716 he only owned a horse, a "snaphaan" [flintlock presumably musket], a "degen" [sword] and two pistols. Hierdie plaas is naby "Bloemkoolfontein" geleë. Theunis se boedelrekening is hierna afgesluit. Volgens J.H. More history available on http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=:606972&id= I22554 and in Pama I p112.

| 81 | 1745 - Coetzee (Hendrik) - wishes to settle his debts, and sell the Pontoon at the Berg River, with everything belonging to it. He had offered the lot to the Landdrost and Heemraden at Stellenbosch, who had refused the offer, because of a certain contract, dated I4th January, 1732, made with his (Coetzee's) predecessor, Abraham de Haan. A Commission from the Board of Heemraden had, however, assisted by the ship's carpenter, Barend van Dockum, valued the Pontoon at f2,ooo, and the house at fi,5OO, both to be taken over for the district at that valuation, or sold to another at that price. But as this amount is much too little in the opinion of memorialist, his predecessor De Haan, having paid more than f3,ooo for the Pontoon alone, and at the same time was obliged personally to stand the risk of a failure and all loss did not the Pontoon safely carry the wagons across and further, taking into consideration the trouble which de Haan annually had to collect his money from the country people, those residing at the French Hoek and the twenty-four Rivers having for a number of years paid nothing, under pretext that they did not use the Pontoon, notwithstanding the contract says that the holder of the Pontoon shall receive from every resident beyond the Berg River annually a muid of corn or its equivalent in money, which has naturally caused great loss to memorialist, as he never could obtain the full amount to which he was entitled, he humbly prays the Council to take all this into consideration, and to permit him to sell by public auction the Pontoon and all its belongings on the same conditions made between Landdrost and Heemraden and his predecessor, as this would prevent all disputes, and Landdrost and Heemraden would have the same opportunity of buying the lot as everyone else. Or, should this not be granted, that Landdrost and Heemraaden may be instructed to pay to memorialist the sum of f8,OOO, the amount at which the whole was valued when memorialist married the widow of de Haan, his predecessor. Council refers the memorial to Landdrost and Heemraden for report. (No. 81.) | BOOYENS, Johannes (I4383)

Petitioner, having bought all the rights, now asks for them, and submits a Resolution on the subject from the Minutes of Landdrost and Heemraden of Stellenbosch, dated nth May, 1784, showing that no one would be inconvenienced by the grant. That it is being used by the Public, and that therefore he should be allowed to charge toll from all passengers and travellers for the maintenance of the work, independent of what everyone has to pay for the maintenance of the Pontoon. He annexed a notice signed by Land. O. de Wet, mentioning how the road is being destroyed by the troops of sheep travelling over it, and ordering, all to confine themselves to the old trek path, to avoid prosecution. | 86 | 1791 - Berg River Residents complain that they are seriously injured in their pasture and other rights by their neighbours on the other side of the river, who do not hesitate to drive their cattle across, and leave them on memorialists' ground day and night for weeks together. Their pastures are consequently eaten up to their great loss, and the trespassing cattle also destroy their gardens, lands and vines. On the other hand, memorialists do not send their cattle across the river. As memorialists have never refused to pay their share to the Pontoon, they pray that they may be protected in their ownership, and that, as before, the Berg River may remain the boundary between them and their neighbours on the other side. Unless this is decreed, memorialists will not be able to subsist, as the cattle is driven through from one farm to the other. 1788 - Signed at Drakenstein on the 31st May, 1788, by A. Louw, J.son, S. Ek was bietjie oorsee gewees en sukkel nog om al die opgehoopte epos deur te werk. Hy is oorlede toe my oupa 5 jaar oud was. Groete Annemarie | LABUSCHAGNE, Johannes Hendrik b2c4d6e1f7g4 (I1808)

| 90 | 18th century: Permanent settlement of the valley began in 1743, when the Company established Simon's Bay, 3 kilometres south of Visch Hoek bay, as a winter anchorage. Governor-general Gustav van Imhoff granted three farms at the western end of the valley, probably to supply fresh produce to Simon's Bay. They were: - Slangkop ('Snake Peak'), - De Goede Hoop ('Good Hope'), - and Poespaskraal ('Hotch-potch kraal'). Half a century later, in 1797, when the colony was under British military occupation, a fourth farm was established, at Visch Hoek, but it was only on loan and the lease ended when the lessee died in 1808. | JOUBERT, Gideon a1b8c3 (I427)

(Hendrina Katharina Wilhelmina KOCH) http://www.diedericks.co.za/aqwc158.htm =========== The original “stamvader” Gottfried Friedrich KOCH arrived in the Cape,on 25 Dec 1765 (having left Fort Rammekens, Zeeland on 4 Aug 1765) as a "soldier", on the ship “Vrijburg”, which left the Cape on 4 Feb 1766 en route to Batavia. However, according to “De Villiers and Pama” the arrival date is 1776, which is incorrect , given the subsequent dates. In fact subsequent research shows that Heese & Lombaard: ”SA Geslagregisters”;Vol 4, p 363 also state 1766 as the arrival date!) from Köthen in the province of Anhalt, Germany, via the Netherlands. He was born about 1745/6 at Köthen, Anhalt, Sachsen in the then Prussian empire. It appears that the family had moved from its previous home town of Brüssow, (the town is now located in the in the Uckermark region of Brandenburg, near the Polish border) Brandenburg, Prussia to Köthen, probably as a result of the 30 Year religious wars. No direct details of Gottfried Friedrich’s parentage are listed on the birth certificate but taking the relative ages into account, as well as the prevalent practice of naming sons after fathers or grandfathers (although it is clear that many sons were named after the Emperor/kings Friedrich and Wilhelm of Prussia) it is very likely that Gottfried Friedrich’s father was: GOTTFRIEDChristened: 8 April 1719 at Brüssow He married (when he was 24 years old) Dorothea Sybilla SCHEULLER, on 16 July 1742, also at Köthen, and just 3 years before GFK’s birth. Dies: 28 january 1793 His father in turn was:FRIEDRICH Born: between 1669 to 1673 at Brüssow, Brandenburg, Prussia Possibly first married in 1692 to Catherine Klette, also of Brüssow, (born 1671) and there after to Sophie WOLLENBERG ( born 1675 in Brüssow) on 20 May 1695 Gottfried Friedrich KOCH becomes a “vry burgher” in 1775, (1772 according to Hoge: “Personalia of the Germans at the Cape", p 208 ), moves to Stellenbosch were he works as a tailor. He is married in Stellenbosch on 28 January 1770 to Rachel van de Kaap. This takes place only a few days before the birth of his 1st son: b1 Godfried Frederik, on 4 February 1770. This boy is presumably the result of the union with said Rachel. Interesting enough no further records are found of this son or his descendants (presumably because of the political attitude of the time). He then moves to Swellendam where, on 4 April 1779, Gottfried Friedrich marries for a second time: to Aletta Claasz, (born 2 November 1749 in Cape Town and the daughter of Claas Claasen and Aletta Alida Knoetzen). She was the widow of Johannes Detlefs (who died on 13 February 1777). Her sister: Maria Magdalena is born 27.9.1744. She dies in Waveren (Tulbagh) in July 1786 Gottfried Friedrich buys a farm in 1790, possibly goes bankrupt in 1791 and dies in 1832 at Swellendam.?! A word of caution: at the time Swellendam was a very large geographical unit, it included subsequent towns as Riversdal, Heidelberg, Caledon even George. Therefore one should be very careful in assuming that with Swellendam the 20th Century town is meant! From this marriage 2 children were born: b2 FREDERIK WILHELM IIs christened on 17 December 1780 at Swellendam and he becomes a burgher in Swellendam. On 10 June 1804 he marries Cornelia Steijn in Swellendam. He files a Will in 1812 and dies in 1822. b3 CHRISTOPHORA FREDERICABorn on 15.12.1782 and was married in Stellenbosch on 7.8.1798 to Hermanus Santjes, who was from Leer, Oos-Friesland. | 94 | 2 PLAC Age: 66 "The time now is a quarter to one in the morning. Darling I do feel so happy. Can you believe that I could be happy in a POW camp?" - Arthur Garvie, Christmas 1944, Germany. Arthur Garvie was born in 1910 to George and Rosa Garvie at Kensington shortly before the family moved to Kenya. Arthur contracted an eye infection which compelled the family to return to South Africa. During the depression years Arthur worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He was an excellent tennis player. He met Corrie KOCH in Vryheid. During World War II he was taken POW with the Umvoti Mounted Rifles at the Fall of Tobruk. His note book has survived. After the war he managed a farm near Carolina. He then worked on the mines at Bourkes Luck, Pilgrims Rest, Blyvooruitzicht and Glen Harmony. Corrie wrote frequently for Afrikaans periodicals such as Huigenoot. They retired in Klerksdorp where Arthur passed away. It is interesting to note that Arthur Garvie died within a few days of the anniversaries of the deaths of Ebenezer and Rosa, his father and mother. Reference: Garvie, C G (Ed.) 1989.
